This piece meets the literal requirements of an assignment I had in my Metal Workshop II class at Bennington: weld 5 steel ball bearings to 2ft of steel rod.
Technically, this piece excerises knowledge of TIG (GTAW) welding and brazing, as well as polishing techniques.
I desgined this device or form with the weight of the material in mind. I was curious about the physical relationship between the individual human body - the hand - and steel, an industrial, virtually indestructable material that is constantly manipulated by the human hand itself.
This "wand" is meant to be held and spun; it's weight shifts throughout its cyclical movement, which is only activated by the motion of the fingers and the palm. The movement becomes magnetic, tapping into and sustaining an inner mode of satisfaction that evovles into a meditative state of bodily awareness. The piece and its physical nature becomes an extension of the hand, the body.
